Abstract

Due the increment of the number of patients with severe obesity, the number of bariatric surgeries performed is increasing, because this procedure is the most effective with short-term results and maintains weight loss in long time. However, bariatric surgery may have side effects that could interfere in oral health. This study will evaluate the oral conditions of 99 morbid obesity patients before and after 180 days of bariatric surgery and will relate with systemic alterations and quality of life. The clinical examination will verify the incidence of dental caries, periodontal disease, prosthetic status and prosthetic need for edentulism and stimulated salivary flow. Information on systemic changes will be collect from medical records. The oral impact on daily performance (OIDP) will be evaluate. The data collected will be tabulate and submitted to an exploratory analysis and later the appropriate statistical tests will be apply. It expected to trace the oral health characteristics of obese patients and patients submitted to bariatric surgery, contributing to the knowledge of the dentist. (AU)
