Italian militants in São Paulo during the Brazilian First Republic: a prosopography

Abstract

The main purpose of this research project abroad is the collection and analysis of the documents of the Italian political police, in the collection of the Archivio Centrale dello Stato in Rome, so as to write a Prosopography of the Italian militants who acted in the working class movement in the State of São Paulo during the First Republic. The focus is the reconstruction of the biographies of these migrant militants, to analyze, through a micro-historical approach and a perspective of transnational global history, their contribution to the making of the Brazilian working class in its social, ethnic and cultural heterogeneity. The results of this research project, added to other works and research accomplished by me in previous years, will be elaborated and published through a Prosopography, a collective biography of these militants, including the elaboration of biographical entries. The aim is to understand the contribution of social experiences prior to migration, as well as those experienced during migration, not exclusively in Brazil, the formation of ethnic, class and militant transnational networks, the circulation of practices and ideas, the formation of identities in transnational ways and contexts.
