Abstract

Throughout most of the nineteenth century and the first decades of the twentieth century, historians often said that excessive violence was one of the elements of societies in the High Middle Ages. The tenth century, in particular, was often described as iron century, in contrast to the political organization and regulation of conflicts present in the Carolingian Empire. Other interpretations have been established since the late 1970s. The re-reading of documents and the discovery of new ones, supported mainly by the advances of the archeology were key factors in this change. Historians begin to adopt new explanations that allow to question the historiography developed until then. Attentive to new discoveries and assumptions, our main objective in this research is to understand how the relations between peace and violence in the hagiography Life of Saint Gerard of Aurillac (c.930) are articulated, with the purpose of characterizing the conflicts and the disputes therein. We will try to understand above all the ways in which reconciliations and new alliances were made, set in a much complex than the mere record of widespread violence. The proposal provides for a period of study at the Université Paris I - Panthéon-Sorbonne, under the supervision of Professor Laurent Jégou, member of the Laboratoire de Médiévistique Occidentale de Paris (LaMOP). The internship is indispensable in the continuity of the present research by allowing access to new collections documentary and bibliographic. (AU)
