Abstract

Due to the exhaustion of water resources for use in hydroelectric plants, other sources of electric power generation have been employed, among them, the growing use of natural gas in thermoelectric power plants (TC) is observed. The problem related to this type of energy matrix is that these units are one of the main responsible for CO2 emissions from fossil sources. Thus, increasing the share of electric power generation by thermoelectric power plants will increase national gas emissions in the medium and long term. An alternative to mitigate this problem is the use of exhausted CO2 as a raw material for the production of chemical products or fuels, through the integration, with the thermoelectric, of CO2 conversion processes. Conversion of CO2 to other products requires energy, so conditions and parameters are necessary to be viable, so that process conditions and performance parameters must be studied to verify the viability of each configuration, through integration of energy, simulation and optimization and intensification of processes. In this way, the proposal of this project is to evaluate the technical, economic and environmental viability of the integration of thermoelectric power plants with CO2 conversion units (directly or indirectly), in order to mitigate global CO2 emissions.This research project will be developed in the context of project 32 - "Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions through the integration of thermoelectric power plants with CO2 conversion technologies" of the CO2 abatement program, within the scope of the Research Center for Gas Innovation (RCGI) process 2014/50279-4.
