Effects of alendronate gel used in periodontal therapy: a histomorphometric study

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to histomorphometric ally analyze the efficacy of locally delivered ALN gel used as an adjunct to scaling and root planning (SRP) for the treatment of experimental periodontitis in rats. Ninety-six rats will subjected to the induction of periodontitis via the installation of a ligature around the mandibular left first molar. After 7 days, the ligature will be removed and the animals will be divided into the following groups: Control (C): no treatment; Scaling and Root Planning (SRP): SRP only; Placebo (P): SRP and the periodontal pocket will be filled with placebo gel; and ALN 1: SRP and the periodontal pocket will be filled with 1% ALN gel. Each group will then be divided into 3 subgroups (n=8) for euthanasia at 7, 15 or 30 days after treatment. The percentage of bone in the furcation will be histometrically evaluated.
