Building information modeling and the architectural heritage: a proposal of digital inventory for the preservation of Vilanova Artigas building (FAUUSP)

Abstract

The recent renovation of Vilanova Artigas Building completed in 2015, headquarters of São Paulo University School of Architecture and Urbanism - FAUUSP, evidences the problematic involved in the preservation of a complex building, representative of the modernist heritage of São Paulo State. The Conservation Management Plan of Vilanova Artigas Building - integrated to the Keeping It Modern program sponsored by Getty Foundation - allowed to collect different kinds of information in the past two years, in the pursuit of identifying or forecasting construction pathologies. Upon considering the digital resource potential in the process of preserving buildings, this research will investigate the problematic involved in developing a Digital Inventory supported on the Building Information Modeling - BIM, with the aim of systematizing preservation processes in standardized BIM environments for the registering and exchange of information. The ABNT set of standards on on Building Information Systems, recently published between 2010 and 2015, contributes to this approach. Upon combining three factors (Conservation Management Plan of Vilanova Artigas Building / BIM process / Information Standardization), the intention is to develop a protocol with focus on the Maintenance and Preservation of Historical Buildings. Such protocol will search for the compliance with ABNT normative instructions integrated in the BIM process, and will be applied to Vilanova Artigas Building. In such a way, it shall integrate practice, theory and technology in a building with explicit didactic and experimental vocation within the architectural concept of its own author, impacting the education and professional practice of the architect.
