Abstract

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is among the most frequent types in the world population. The increase in the development of this disease is mainly in eating habits. Evidence shows that the composition of the intestinal microbiota may be associated with the development of CRC and other dysbioses. Modulation of the gut by probiotics and phenolic compounds alone or in combination could positively influence the immune system and is beneficial in the preserving of CRC. The association of probiotics and phenolics presents great potential since some studies have suggested that there is a synergy among them. The objective of this project will be to investigate the chemoprotective effect of extracts from blueberries, jabuticabas and cinnamon isolated or together with probiotics against CRC cells development. The project will be carried out following antiproliferative, apoptosis, anti-radical and quinone reductase assays. No research addressing the chemoprevention effects of these extracts together with probiotics on CRC cells was found in the literature, which allows us to intuit that this is an innovative proposal.
