Nitrate leaching losses (NO3-) can result in groundwater contamination and reduce the nutrient use efficiency of crops. Soils with sandy texture, soils rich in organic N, intense rains and high doses of nitrogen fertilizer are reported as the main factors favoring leaching nitrate losses. The objective of this study is to evaluate the nitrate leaching in function of soil texture, water addition, nitrogen fertilization and N concentration in the soil profile. Three experiments will be carried out under greenhouse conditions. In the first experiment, the treatments will be composed of five soil textures and three levels of precipitation (control, 700, 900 and 1200 mm). The textures will be obtained from the mixture of clay and sandy soil conditioned in PVC columns. For the second experiment, the treatments will be consisted of three soil textures and three N levels. In the last one, soils with clay and sandy textures will be packed in the columns and four doses of 15N-nitrate [control, 80 mg kg -1, 160 mg kg -1 and 240 mg kg -1] will be added. The results will be submitted to analysis of variance (ANOVA) and complemented by means test (P d 0.05). The results obtained will be used to feed the Hydrus 1-D simulation model, to estimate water drainage and nitrate movement in the soil.Keywords: Nitrogen losses; nitrogen fertilizer; agricultural crops; modeling.
