The genus Brachycephalus comprises 34 species of miniaturized anurans, all endemic from the Atlantic Forest in Brazil. It is popularly known by the remarkable diversity associated to high elevation sites of the biome. Even with the current advances in the knowledge of the genus, it has severe taxonomic problems, exacerbated by the absence of a reliable phylogenetic hypothesis. Recent studies aiming to sampling distribution gaps, new species descriptions and evaluation of patterns of distribution, along with the resolution of taxonomic uncertainties, may help to identify the main processes acting in these species diversification and to elucidate its evolutionary history. This project aims to provide new information about the genus Brachycephalus, with the following specific goals: (1) to evaluate the taxonomic status of distinct populations from São Paulo state, aiming to describe new taxa, (2) to investigate genetic and phenotypic divergence in two datasets of sister populations/species, aiming to identify and describe the diversification processes acting along the elevational and latitudinal gradients in the Atlantic Forest, and (3) to improve the genetic, phenotypic, and ecological database through sampling in distribution gaps.
