Abstract

Post menopausal osteoporosis is characterized by decreased mineral bone density, resulting in reduced force and alterations in trabecular bone. Some coadjuvant therapies have been evaluated, mainly the utilization of drugs, which can induce side effects. Thus, the development of alternative strategies based on antioxidant natural compounds is been recently investigated. The purpose of this study is to perform in vivo assays to evaluate the stimulatory potential of mate tea (ilex paraguariensis) in calvaria defects created in osteoporotic rats. There will be utilized 36 wistar female rats divided in 4 groups (n=8): C (control), Cev (control + mate tea), OVX (ovariectomized) and OVXev (ovariectomized + mate tea). After 60 days of ovariectomy, there will be created unilateral bone defects of 5mm diameter at the left side of parietal lobe of all animals. The selected groups will receive mate tea in the concentration of 20 mg/kg/ three days a week immediately after ovariectomy until sacrifice. The next step will be sacrifice and removal of the calvaria to perform qualitative and quantitative histologic analysis. The obtained data will be analyzed by adequate statistical tests with the significance set to p d 0.05, with the goal to find positive effects with the utilization of mate tea in bone neoformation in a situation of osteoporosis.
