Abstract

The scope of this PhD research project consists of the study of the control and management of a DC microgrid using a wind energy conversion system based on a switched reluctance generator (SRG). The SRG is pointed out in the literature as a viable option to aerogenerator because of its characteristics of robustness and high efficiency in a wide range of speeds. These electrical machines generate energy in continuous current so that these machines are natural candidates to operate in a DC microgrid. DC microgrid have vantages if compared to the AC utility grid, especially comparing the capacity to integrate renewable energy sources, as solar and wind energy, in a distributed generation model. However, the control and management of the DC microgrid integrating multiple elements have become a challenge to be explored. This project proposes to study the effects of the SRG connected to a DC microgrid that incorporates energy storage devices, electrical loads, power electronic converters and integration with the conventional AC utility grid. Control techniques and management methods will be investigated to allow the adequate behavior of the microgrid with the SRG as a main source of distributed electrical energy.
