Abstract

Chronic alcoholism impairs the tissue repair, altering the inflammatory response and the cell proliferation and differentiation. During the wound reepithelization, the epithelial cells exhibit different expression of adhesion molecules, such as E-cadherin and Beta-catenin, acquiring a mesenchymal phenotype and high capacity of migration. The effect of ethanol on this process is unknown in the oral mucosa. The aim of this study is to analyze the effect of ethanol on the immunohistochemistry expression of E-cadherin and Beta-catenin during the wound healing in the tongue mucosa. In previous studies, we conducted a chronic alcoholism model in Wistar rats, adding different ethanol concentrations in the drinking water for 28 weeks. After this, a standardized wound was performed in the tongue mucosa, which was analyzed at 1, 3, 7 and 9 days during the repair process. These specimens will be utilized in the present project, for immunohistochemistry evaluation of E-cadherin and Beta-catenin expression during the reepithelization phase. We expect to clarify the role of E-cadherin and Beta-catenin in the reepithelization of oral mucosa, and the effect of ethanol on the immunolabeling of these proteins. (AU)
