Abstract

The project discusses the reactions of Brazilians literary critics to the translations of the work of Machado de Assis in order to understand the importance of this author to the international diffusion of the Brazilian literature between the 1930s and 1950s. This study will be based on materials collected in six journalistic scrapbooks of Plínio Doyle from the Arquivo Museu de Literatura Brasileira of the Fundação Casa de Rui Barbosa in Rio de Janeiro and studied by the advisor of this project during his postdoctoral internship at that institution. The collection contains essays, testimonies, interviews, surveys and news published in newspapers all over Brazil around the centenary of the birth of Machado de Assis and the fiftieth anniversary of his death, celebrated in 1939 and 1958 respectively. Through the mapping, systematization, and study of this material, this research aims the establishment of connections and the identification of tensions between the translations of the work of Machado de Assis, his consolidation as the main national writer and the insertion of Brazilian literature in an international or extranational framework.
