Abstract

Although the practice of urban agriculture is as old as the emergence of the first cities, it begins to gain relevance in a context of rapid population growth, especially in the underdeveloped countries of the African and Asian continents. In these continents, disorderly population growth has led to increased social inequalities, leading to an increase in the number of people living in poverty and food insecurity. In view of this, urban agricultural practices come as measures to address these situations of food and economic vulnerability in which these peoples were. Based on the experiences of agricultural practices in cities in poor and food insecure countries, Brazil brings urban agriculture into the scope of government actions based on the Fome Zero Program, at the beginning of the Lula government in 2003, as a strategy for fight against hunger in the country, focusing mainly on the critical situations of social differences present in the metropolitan regions. Aiming to contribute to the studies that seek to analyze the dynamics of urban agriculture in Brazil, we used as a cut for this research the municipality of Pirapozinho, in the state of São Paulo, seeking to understand the different urban agricultural practices developed on the site as a guarantee strategy food security and income generation for the population living in the municipality.
