Contribution of public libraries to the socio-cultural development of cities

Abstract

Public libraries are fundamental for the democratization of knowledge, the exercise of citizenship, the creation of critical readers, the accessibility of the information contents and development and promotion of many cultural activities. Although there are public libraries that have achieved satisfaction results in the management and their social function, a lot of them still face factors related to poor management. Considering practical examples of success full management in public libraries, the public policies for libraries, which are often a model, exist in the State of São Paulo, there is a way to verify the mode of action of these localities. It is possible to realize that there is a socio-cultural development in these examples, it is intended to make a case study in the administrative region of Marilia, where it will be verified how the State policies can contribute to a quality management of public libraries.
