Abstract

Abstract: The aim is to investigate astronomical science performance, by carrying out simulations of the MOSAIC spectrograph, by characterizing the performance of optical and near-infrared fibres, design of slit-unit prototype and test set-up, slit unit performance tests. The scientific aim is spectroscopy of distant stars, globular clusters and integrated light of galaxies.Objectives: Scientific perspective:The primary goal is the work on simulations of observations in the future MOSAIC@ELT spectrograph. It includes in particular spectroscopy of distant stars and integrated light of globular clusters and galaxies.It also includes acquaintance with the expertise in optical fibers and slit assembly developed at the Laboratório Nacional de Astrofísica (LNA),under the direction of the coordinator at LNA Bruno Castilho. Description of the work plan:The work involves software for simulations of the MOSAIC spectrograph, characterization of the performance of optical and near-infrared fibres. A simulation software is already developed by the Observatoire de Paris. Construction of spectra using spectrum synthesis codes PFANT and TURBOSPECTRUM, as well as construction of the integrated light of single stellar populations, typical of star clusters is intended. Work on stellar spectra of different spectral resolutions, and on integrated spectra of globular clusters and galaxies should be developed.It also involves participation in the work at the LNA/MCTIC on the design of slit-unit prototype and test set-up, slit unit performance tests.Cronogram: 1st year: Work simulations of observations for the MOSAIC spectrograph. Work on optical fibers at the Laboratório Nacional de Astrofísica/MCTI together with IAG staff working recently on spectrographs using fibers (SIFS, PFS/SUBARU). 2nd year, 3rd year: Work in Brazil and the Netherlands, on simulations, characterizing the performance of optical and near-infrared fibres, design of slit-unit prototype and slit unit performance tests.
