Abstract

Global warming and the depletion of fossil fuels have caused great concern for society, so it is necessary to search and study forms of sustainable and renewable energy. In this sense, fuel cells and metal/air batteries are of great interest, and the study of more efficient and cost-effective materials that can be used in these devices is of great importance. In view of these challenges, this project aims to develop hybrid electrocatalysts based on Pd, Pt and Sn nanoparticles, and ceria nanorods (NR CeO2), supported on Vulcan XC-72 carbon and carbon nanotubes, to be applied to fuel cells. In order to evaluate these electrocatalysts the Oxygen Reduction Reaction (ORR), Oxygen Evolution Reaction (OER) and the Ethanol Oxidation Reaction (EOR) in alkaline and/or acid medium will be studied. The electrocatalysts will be characterized by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), surface area by BET, contact angle, zeta potential and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) in situ of by-products formed in EOR will also be performed. The ORR will be studied by the Rotating Ring-Disc Electrode (RRDE) technique and the OER with the Rotating Disc Electrode (RDE) technique. The electrocatalysts will be applied in fuel cell experiments and their applicability in metal/air. (AU)
