Abstract

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is considered an increasing public health problem. Similarly, the prevalence of obesity is growing in overall population and even more in CKD patients. Nutritional management of Non-Dialysis Dependent (NDD) CKD requires various dietary modifications that may impact in quality of life and diet quality of the patients, representing a challenge for the health care team. These challenges are much greater in obese CKD population. Behavioral nutritional approaches have been suggested in diverse populations to promote eating by internal cues and enhance body acceptance. The American Dietetic Association indicates that dietitians should be encouraged to develop effective group facilitation skills. The knowledge of eating attitude and behavior are essential for health education. Thus, innovative approaches considering these concepts are desired to enhance motivation, adherence and self-management in the treatment of chronic diseases. However, and few studies have used such behavioral approaches in CKD patients. Objective: To evaluate the impact of a behavioral nutritional intervention in overweight NDD-CKD women. Methods: This is a prospective uncontrolled clinical trial that will be conducted in the outpatient clinic of NDD-CKD from the Kidney Hospital of Oswaldo Ramos Foundation. Fourteen meetings will be conducted for groups of approximately 10 patients once a month to facilitate behavior changes related to nutritional issues. Patients will be evaluated before and after intervention in order to assess nutritional status, dietary intake, and diet quality, quality of life, body image, and body composition, binge eating and laboratorial parameters. Two focal groups will be conducted to evaluate patient's expectations (before) and interventions results (after). (AU)
