Abstract

This project proposes to synthesize, characterize and investigate the properties of a new compound [Ru(bpy)2NI)2]PF6, which presents a ligand of the naftalimides (NI) family, namely N-pyridyl-1,8- Naftalimide. The project is original, since so far no proposals have been verified with the combination of the [Ru(bpy)2] chromophore with the NI photoactive ligand. The interest in this study is justified according to the individual properties of each chromophore of interest (NI and [Ru(bpy)2]), such as photophysical properties (emission bands in the visible region and excited states with long life-times), UV-visible absorption bands and solvatochromism, and electrochemical (at least two redox processes centered on the NI ligand and one in the Ru (II) ion n the working window, in addition to thermal stability and the new properties that should arise in the complex due to the mutual disturbance of the assembled units. From the experience in inorganic synthesis in the laboratory, novel synthetic and purification routes will be drawn. As for characterization, this will follow methods well described in the literature, using the NMR spectroscopy techniques, absorption in the region of UV-visible and infrared, luminescence and cyclic differential. It is also noteworthy that this project integrates a larger context which ambition is to reintroduce the Supramolecular Chemistry as a research front within the group of Prof. Sofia Nikolaou.
