Background: Previous studies have shown an association between temporomandibular disorders (TMD) pain and central sensitization(CS), which is characterized by a state of hyperexcitability of the Central Nervous System, it can manifest through a distortion or amplification of pain. The presence of CS also includes a hypofunction of the pain inhibitory system, affecting the modulation of the nociceptive function. There are evidences of the association between insomnia and CS in individuals with chronic pain. However, there is a lack in the literature regarding this association in patients with TMD pain. Aim: To estimate the association between central sensitization, TMD pain and insomnia. Methods: This will be a cross-sectional clinical study conducted in a sample of 160 individuals, aged between 20-65 years, stratified into three groups: 1) Control (free of TMD pain and insomnia); 2) Insonmia TMD pain; 3) TMD pain, and 3) TMD pain and insomnia. TMD pain will be classified according to Research Diagnosis Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (RDC/TMD). Insomnia will be assessed according to the criteria of the 3rd International Classification of Sleep Disorders, and quantified by the Insomnia Severity Index questionnaire. The presence of CS will be detected by the Conditioned Pain Modulation test that demonstrates a difficulty of individuals to modulate painful inputs. A multinomial univariate and multivariate regression model will be applied to data analysis, considering p <0.05. (AU)
