Direct Ethanol Fuel Cells (DEFCs) are electrochemical devices capable of transforming chemical energy into useful electrical energy with high efficiency and minimal emission of pollutants. The aim of this project is to synthesize, characterize, evaluate and apply binary palladium and niobium electrocatalysts in the form of nanospheres, nanocubes and nanocages for ethanol oxidation reactions (ROE) in alkaline medium and, consequently, in fuel cells. The electrocatalysts will be synthesized by the class of chemical reduction methods (Botton up) varying the chemical composition and morphology of the metals, using substrates such as carbon vulcan XC72, graphene and carbon nanotubes of multiple walls for the nanoparticles because these parameters directly influence the electrocatalytic activity of materials. The electrocatalysts will be physically characterized by x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, dispersive energy spectroscopy, electron microscopy transmission, zeta potential and by electrochemical techniques. The niobium will be used as an auxiliary metal for palladium catalysis and its use in DEFC technology is extremely relevant because Brazil has 95% of all niobium reserves worldwide. It is thus expected to develop binary electrocatalysts for DEFCs that can have high power density at ROE, with reduced manufacturing cost, stability and durability for long operating durations.
