This project intends to cope with romance, a major mode of the theory of narrative which affects especially 19th century literature, as Walter Scott´s Waverley, Balzac´s Le père Goriot and Victor Hugo´s Les misérables effectivelly shows (Frye; Brooks). In this case, one shall concentrate on two of the most important Brazilian novelists of that period, José de Alencar and Machado de Assis, especially O guarani (1857) and Esaú e Jacó (1904), respectively. Despite being considered historical novels, all of them bring romance into the center of the plot, not only as "formulaic techniques" (Frye) but also and mainly as a normative issue, working as a "contre-modèle de la réalité" (Schaeffer) and a sign of a "difficulté axiologique" (Pavel). In this sense, romance represents the quintessence of possible worlds since it boosts the "world-creating powers of imagination" (Pavel). This is entirely true for the novels studied, as this research intends to prove.
