Abstract

The emergence and development of Mathematical Economics has been a subject of great interest recently among historians of economics, in particular that produced in the US. The recent period has also witnessed a surge of historical accounts of major economics departments such as those at the University of Chicago, University of Cambridge and MIT. Understanding the spread of Mathematical Economics in the twentieth century necessarily involves an adequate understanding of networks formed in particular departments. This project aims to study the history of departments of economics in Stanford and Berkeley, the networks of researchers formed within these departments and their relations with other departments of Economics, of Mathematics and of Statistics, as a way of understanding the spread of Mathematical Economics in the international scientific community. In Brazil, Mathematical Economics was also developing with clear ties with the US academy. This project also aims to study the group of researchers in Mathematical Economics in the Instituto de Matemática Pura e Aplicada, and its relationship with the departments of Berkeley and Stanford, as a way to understand the history of the spread of Mathematical Economics in Brazil.
