Abstract

Pain is considered the fifth vital sign, and its evaluation can be done through several scales. Gabapentin is an anticonvulsant drug used in multimodal pain therapy, along with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, opioids and local anesthetics. Pain pathways, if constantly stimulated, can lead to hyperalgesia. Thus, it is easier to prevent pain than to treat it. The aim of this study was to evaluate the analgesic efficacy of different analgesia protocols, with and without gabapentin, to dogs submitted to chirurgic for tibial plateau leveling (TPLO), evaluating acute postoperative pain using Pain Scale of the University of Colorado and the Glasgow Modified Pain Scale. Twenty dogs, males and females, of different ages, with weight and racial pattern established according to the casuistry, coming from the Service of Orthopedics of small animals, with diagnosis of cranial cruciate ligament disease with or without meniscus lesion and submitted to Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy (TPLO) and that the owners are aware of the protocol to be performed and authorize it through protocols.
