The process of aging promote several changes to the human organism through sarcopenia, resulting from the physical inactivity associated to menopause, triggers many morphological changes in the area of muscle-tendon interaction denominated myotendinous junction (MTJ). Physical exercise attenuate the effects of muscle atrophy and lead to benefits in the region of the myotendinous junction and bring a new description of the lengths of sarcomeres. The aim of the present study will be describe the development of structures, ultrastructure and morphometric of sarcomeres and myotendinous junction of sternomastoid of Wistar aged rats, submitted to the experimental model of menopause and swimming training. There, will be used 40 rats with 1 year and 2 months of age randomly divided into four groups (n=10): Sedentary Group (S); Trained Group (T); Menopause Group (M) and Trained Menopause Group (TM) from the Animal Facility - Campus de Botucatu-SP. The training protocol will consist of 5 weekly sessions of 60 minutes for a period of 8 weeks, totalizing 40 sessions and 5% overload of the animals body mass. With the results obtained the morphological images will be analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively through light microscopy (n=5), revealing their morphometric characteristics by Axiovision Rel. 4.6 (Carl Zeiss) software and transmission electron microscopy (n=5), which will show the ultrastructural characteristics. Measurement of the lengths and thicknesses of sarcoplasmic invaginations and evaginations, as well as the lengths of sarcomeres will be mensurated using ImageJ software. (AU)
