Understanding the exposome approach: from the concept to the applications in public health

Abstract

The municipality of Limeira has a huge relevance in the productive chain of the jewelry and fashion jewelry industry, however, the informal outsourcing practices are very marked in that Local Productive Arrangement, which means improvised working conditions in households. Focusing on better understanding the complexity of the exposure to potentially toxic elements (PTEs) of families inserted in the informal and home productive arrangement in Limeira, in addition to starting the exposome study in Brazil by consolidating international collaboration with HEALS (Health and Environment-wide Associations based on Large Population Surveys), the aims of this internship are i) to perform untargeted omics analyses for the samples collected during the master degree study of the proponent and associated studies (FAPESP processes 2016/07457-4 and 2016/11087-8), aiming to understand the metabolic routes altered by chemical exposure ii) to accomplish the cohort study carried out by HEALS to know the exposome approach and then planning future studies related to the ongoing project entitled "From exposome up to Regulatory Toxicology: a thematic study of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) exposure of families inserted in informal and home productive arrangement in the jewelry and fashion jewelry chain from Limeira, SP" (FAPESP: 2016/11087-8) which includes the project "Families inserted in Local Productive Arrangement of the productive chain of jewelry and fashion jewelry from Limeira, SP: the occupational exposure to chemical contaminants in home setting" (FAPESP: 2016/07457-4). To achieve the aim "i" metabolomics and transcriptomic (LC-MS/MS and NMR) will be carried out for plasma samples and an intensive training with the HEALS investigator will be performed in order to enable the Brazilian research group to apply the exposome approach in the Limeira project.
