Abstract

The Brazilian cosmetics market is among the most important in the world, occupying the 4th position in the world ranking and the 8th position in the market for the preparations whose goal is to treat the skin, known as skin care. In this market, anti-aging products have a strong growth trend and among these products antioxidants can be highlighted. Phenolic compounds are widely distributed in plants and microorganisms, also belonging to animal metabolism. Cinnamic acids are part of these compounds, ferulic acid being one of their representatives. This acid has antioxidant potential and anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. It also prevents the damaging effects of radiation both as a UV absorber and as a free radical scavenger, as well as being non-cytotoxic. Although it has interesting properties, ferulic acid is little used in the cosmetic preparations offered on the market and there are few studies that show the efficacy of this acid. Thus, this project is based on the use of ferulic acid in cosmetic preparations, with research aimed at confirming the antioxidant functions by the 2,2'azinobis- (3-ethylbensothiazoline) -6-sulfonic acid radical (ABTS*+) and antimicrobial activity using cultures of strains E. coli ATCC 10536, S. aureus ATCC 6538, S. epidermides ATCC 12228, P. aeruginosa ATCC 27853, P. acnes, in order to make possible its multifunctional efficacy as a result of its application in preparations for the treatment of the skin. Keywords: Ferulic acid, Antioxidant, Antimicrobial, Skin care, Antiaging.
