Abstract

The coastal plain formation of the Brazilian sea is mainly due to the relative sea level fluctuation in the past. Geologists claim that before the last 125,000 years, sea level had reached about 8 ± 2 meters above the sea level today. Sedimentological and biological evidence was used to understand the effects of sea level fluctuation in the past. However, after 1974 several geologists studied the fluctuation of the sea level, and Martin & Suguio presented studies with great emphasis, mainly from the quaternary period, using the radiocarbon method which is an absolute technique used in many works. Armação dos Búzios city is located 200 km northeast of Rio de Janeiro and it is known as a tourist center. Armação dos Búzios municipality is on the west side of this city, lowlands 2 meters above the current sea level. Martin & Suguio's theory says that in the Holocene period up to about 5700 and 3700 years ago the sea level oscillated between 2.5 meters above the current, which left the region submerged to the sea. During this period of time there was a proliferation of bivalve mollusks which left in the region, called Coastal Plain of the Rio Una, more than billions of mollusk shells. Castro et al. (2014), dating these shells and other elements showed that sea level transgressed around 11500 years ago to a maximum of about 2.5 meters above the current level. Around 3700 years ago the sea level regressed to the current sea level. It is part of the Una river plain, a region called Malhada Marsh and in this project sediments and shells from this region will be collected and dated by Thermoluminescence (TL), Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) and Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) techniques and will be correlated the past 6000 years ago to the present.
