Abstract

The rocks of the Poços de Caldas Alkaline Complex contain many rare minerals, some of them rich in rare earth elements. However, many of these minerals have only been observed or partially described, it justify why only 2 new minerals species were find there (fluorlamprophyllite - (SrNa)Ti2Na3Ti(Si2O7)2O2F2 and manganoeudialyte - Na14Ca6Mn3Zr3[Si26O72(OH)2](H2O,Cl,O,OH). The study of the alkaline rocks from Poços de Caldas aims to increase the current mineralogical knowledge and find new mineral species through researches that involve mineral characterization by determination of crystal chemistry and structure. The crystal-chemistry characterizations have already been done and through these information interesting minerals were selected to proceed to the structural characterization to verify if a new mineral species was discovered. The mineral structure characterization involves the usage of single-crystal X-ray diffraction technique, to recognize the atomic arrangement (position of each type of atom in the unit cell) that determines the mineral structure. Such information along with data from powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM-EDS), electron microprobe (EM), optical properties, Raman spectroscopy and a complementary study by infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) will define the mineral species in accordance with the International Mineralogical Association (IMA) rules.
