Abstract

Nature and landscape are the two categories which this postdoctoral project seeks to understand, taking the conceptual affinities (somehow contradictions) that there are in Goethe and Humboldt works as empirical foundation, as well as their reception in foreign naturalists literature and painting. Indeed, the apprehension of nature, both in Goethe and Humboldt, appears as aesthetical and scientific experience, that is, the study of nature and landscape involve a subjective dimension by which the freedom to appreciate landscape confers to scientific inquiry its completeness. In Goethe, the nature would be the totality of phenomena, while which landscape would connote a fraction of that totality framed by constantly trained eyes. Humboldt shares that idea assigning to the landscape (the physiognomy or views of nature) the synthetically representation of nature. The legacy of Goethe´s and Humboldt´s perceptions circulated throughout Europe attracting artists and scientists interested in depicting the landscape and analyzing the phenomena of nature revealed in distant places such as early nineteenth-century Brazil. Thus, the apprehension of landscape modifies in Brazil with the movement of foreign naturalists idea, and their presence brought the sensible perception of nature, poetic and contemplative. In this respect, the Project is divided into three parts: firstly, it shows how nature and landscape are revealed in Goethe´s writings; secondly, it seeks to interpret Humboldt´s way of describing nature and its pictures; finally, the last part intends to demonstrate the conceptual alignment between Goethe and Humboldt and how that affinity is evident in the foreign naturalist´s discourses.
