The calcium aluminate as biomaterial has been evaluated for its physical, mechanical and biocompatibility properties. Calcium aluminate based materials exhibit, due to their unique hardening and microstructure characteristics, a great potential as a biomaterial. Studies report the application of calcium aluminate cements in orthopedics for bone repair due to its composition and coefficient of thermal expansion similar to that of human bone. Thus, the objective of this study will be to evaluate experimental compositions of blends based on calcium aluminate cement aiming its medical and dental application as bone substitutes in critical defects aiming bone repair. Will be used 20 Wistar rats in this study, which will be submitted to the creation of a bone defect monocortical in each femur. The animals will be divided randomly into 4 groups with n = 5, according to the filling of the bone defect: a) group C: calcium aluminate base cement; b) group P: polymethyl methacrylate cement (PMMA); c) group H: calcium aluminate cement associated with hydroxyapatite; d) group Q: calcium aluminate cement associated with chitosan. After 4 weeks, all animals will be euthanized. In the right femurs will be performed histological and histomorphometric analysis for visualization of the interface bone-tissue samples and also quantification of bone neoformation at this site using the Las Phase software. In the left femur, a push-out test will be performed to evaluate the fixation strength between bone- tissue sample. The data obtained will be submitted to the normality statistical test and then the appropriate statistical test will be applied. (AU)
