Design of novel paper-based screen-printed electrochemical sensors for monitoring of emerging environmental substance

Abstract

Screen printing technology is a widely used technique for the fabrication of electrochemical sensors. This methodology is responsible by the progressive drive towards miniaturized, sensitive and portable devices. The application of sensors provided by this methodology for analysis of environmental samples has been the major focus of research in this field. Such devices can perform automated chemical analysis in complex matrices and provide rapid, reliable and inexpensive measurements of a variety of inorganic and organic pollutants. In this context, the design of novel paper-based screen-printed electrodes for application as sensitive and reproducible electrochemical sensors for detection of emergent environmental substance at surface water samples is proposed in this project. Paper-based screen-printed (bio)sensors modified with carbon black (and biological material in the case of biosensor) will be fabricated using a procedure developed in the Moscone's laboratory at University of Rome Tor Vergata. Following the fabrication and characterization steps, the proposed electrode architectures will be applied for the voltammetric or amperometric sensing of analytes of environmental interest.
