Abstract

There is a worldwide increase of elderly population and the aging is causing a number of functional modifications on the whole organism, including the stomatognathic system. A large portion of elderly suffer tooth loss along their life and need prosthetic treatment for the return of the mastication. Muscles' activity evaluation before and after the rehabilitation treatment is justified to the knowledge of the muscle's function of each individual in different oral situations. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of oral rehabilitation with new conventional complete dentures on bite force and on electromyographic amplitude of suprahyoids and sternocleidomastoid muscles, as well as their correlation between Occlusal Vertical Dimension (OVD). Patients from the clinic of Total Prosthesis of Araçatuba Odontology University (UNESP) will be recruited, whom will be selected according to the inclusion criteria. Yet in the first moment the demographic data will be collected. After the patients selection, while they still wear the old denture, they will be submitted to the exams of bite force and electromyographic amplitude. Again, the exams will be repeated 30 days after the new prosthesis implantation as well as the OVD will be measured while the patients wear their old and also their new prostheses. Ninety days after the prostheses implantation the exams will be repeated. The data obtained from the tests will be submitted to the normality test. If indicates a statistically significant difference, the adequate probability test will be applied, using correlation test when possible, concluding the analysis.
