The political and intellectual trajectory of San Tiago Dantas (1929-1964): from integralism to reformist developmentalism

Abstract

This research intends to analyze the intellectual production and the political trajectory of San Tiago Dantas from 1929 to 1964. Although Dantas is widely remembered as the main formulator of the Independent Foreign Policy, when Minister of Foreign Affairs of the parliamentary government of João Goulart (1961-1962), he was also a distinguished jurist, intellectual and political whose thought and action cover other areas beyond foreign policy. This project aims to analyze, from the examination of his theoretical work and analyst activity in periodicals, the author's political-ideological shift - initially characterized by an authoritarian-conservative position (adherence to integralism in his formative years) to a democratic-progressivist character (identified with the reformist developmentalism), between 1929 and 1964.
