Abstract

The arboviruses are viruses transmitted by arthropods that cause a spectrum of symptoms ranging from febrile illness to encephalitis and it has large importance in public health. The most known and circulating in Brazil are Yellow Fever, Dengue and recently Chikungunya and Zika. Zika virus has recently emerged in Brazil, being associated with cases of fever, arthralgia and Guillain-Barre syndrome and congenital malformation. This virus is antigenically related to the virus of Dengue and Yellow Fever, which makes it difficult their serodifferentiation. It presents symptoms similar to other arboviruses such as the Chikungunya virus, which makes it difficult to identify them through clinical signs. Recent cases of microcephaly in newborns have been associated with Zika virus. However, the causal relationship between the presence of Zika and microcephaly is weak because there are no large cohort studies. This study aims to investigate the Zika virus and others arbovirus in a prospective five-year cohort of pregnant women and their newborns; to validate serological and molecular diagnostic methods; aims to relate laboratory and clinical data; quantify and isolate the virus from different clinical samples; and will also monitor serological and molecular characteristics of the isolates. In this way, questions related to the zika epidemic will be answered, as well as questions related to other arboviruses that co-circulate in Brazil. (AU)
