Abstract In this project we propose the study of nonlinear effects in optical microcavities made of semiconductor materials. The student will understand the power dependent mechanisms leading to absorption and dispersion in the optical modes of these devices. Specifically, the contributions of nonlinear effects such as two-photon absorption, free-carrier absorption, Kerr effect, free-carrier and thermal dispersion will be studied through measurements of the transmission and reflection spectra of these cavities.
