Abstract

Well-differentiated thyroid carcinomas, such as papillary and follicular thyroid carcinomas, are the most frequent endocrine neoplasms and their incidence has been growing more and more over time. Included within this group are Hürthle cell carcinomas (CCH). CCH have been associated with worse prognosis when compared to other well differentiated carcinomas. Partly because of the low response to radioactive iodine treatment. Patients with the widely invasive type of HCG have a low prognosis, with a recurrence rate of 31% and a specific mortality rate of 25%. If patients have distant metastases, the mortality rate may reach 80%. Many changes such as mutations or rearrangements associated with the pathogenesis of papillary and follicular carcinomas have been identified. Several groups have sought genetic alterations that may be associated with the pathogenesis of Hürthle neoplasias, and in this way, understand the clinical and biological differences compared to other well differentiated thyroid carcinomas. Among these, RET / PTC rearrangements have been associated with more indolent forms. Little is known about genetic events in the most aggressive forms. Fusion of the striatal gene (STRN) with the anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) gene, termed STRN-ALK, has been identified in more aggressive forms of thyroid carcinomas. The high efficacy of treatment by ALK inhibitors makes this fusion an important therapeutic target for more aggressive tumors. This project aims to evaluate the prevalence of STRN-ALK rearrangement in Hürthle cell neoplasms. (AU)
