Abstract

Political parties constitute the axis of representative democracy. Parties have, in democratic regimes, three essential functions: (a) organize electoral competition; (b) aggregate interests; (c) form governs and conduct legislative works. Because of that, it is important to understand their behavior in all its dimensions: organizational; electoral and legislative. The main aims of this research are: (a) map and classify the types of local organizations developed by five political parties in Latin America: Partido pela Democracia (PPD, Chile); União Democrática Independente (UDI, Chile); Partido da Revolução Democrática (PRD, México); Frente Sandinista de Libertação Nacional (FSLN, Nicarágua); e Aliança Republicana Nacionalista (Arena, El Salvador); (b) analyze the impact of historical, contextual, internal and institutional variables over the development of these organizations. In order to do that, we will adopt a comparative approach combining both qualitative and quantitative techniques.
