Sugarcane bagasse (SCB) and pentose liquor are agro industrial wastes widely produced by sugar and alcohol industry which the inappropriate disposal led to environmental problems. However, these biomass can be used as substrate in anaerobic process to generation of value-added products, as biofuel. Nevertheless, due to its complexity the consume of these biomass is not an easy process, so studies are required related to operational parameters to efficient conversion of these biomass and consequently production of metabolites. Thus, this project proposes the comparison of the hydraulic retention time (HRT - 12, 24, 36 and 48 hours) in a compartmentalized thermophilic anaerobic fixed-bed reactor (RALFC) aiming the BCA and pentose liquor degradation to production of hydrogen and organic acids. To do this, a microbial consortium from the enrichment of thermophilic sludge treating vinasse in an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor (UASB) will be bioaugmented with microorganism endogenous from SCB. The liquid phase will be constituted by the waste (pentose liquor) diluted in a culture medium (Atlas, 2005) and inoculum while in the solid phase , the SCB fiber will be conditioned in compartments along of the reactor acting as well support to microbial adhesion as substrate. The reactors will be incubated at 55ºC and the pH from feeding will be adjusted to 6,0. The hydrogen and organic acids production will be evaluated by gas and liquid chromatography, respectively. Microbial characterization of all reactors will be performed by microscopy and polymerase chain reaction/denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (PCR/DGGE). Phylogenetic characterization will be performed on the reactor which achieves the superior performance.
