Though the severity and prevalence of dental caries have decreased significantly in developed countries, the need to increase the lifetime of restorative treatments using composite resins remains. Studies have shown that ions released by restorations containing calcium orthophosphate particles can protect the surrounding enamel against cariogenic challenges. The purpose of this project is to verify the possible protective effect on enamel by experimental composites containing dicalcium phosphate dihydrate (DCPD) nanoparticles using microhardness testing. Cavities prepared on the labial surface of bovine incisor teeth will be restored using one of the following materials (n=10): experimental composite containing 60 vol% of barium silicate glass (control 1), experimental composites containing 10% and 20% of DCPD (replacing part of the glass particles) and a resin-modified glass ionomer cement (control 2). The specimens will be exposed to pHcycling for 14 days oand then have their surface and transverse microhardness analyzed. The percent difference of enamel microhardness between the control side (protected by cosmetic enamel) and the side exposed to pH cycling will be calculated. Data will be tested for normality and homoscedasticity in order to define the most suitable methodto be used in the statistical analysis. (AU)
