Latrunculin use in microorganism control: cell engineering application

Abstract

The biological contamination in ovens and water baths inside of cell culture labs is a universal problem. The consequence of this problem goes from the partial damage of research to the loss of credibility of the laboratory. To avoid it, there are some products available. However, the use of these compounds is contradictory in scientific publications and its cost can be prohibitive. The exponential increase in the use of the techniques of cultivation of animal cells in biomedicine propels searches to solve the challenge of identifying and validating the use of new molecules with action on microorganisms. Latrunculin is a compound with antibiotic properties extracted from Negombata magnifica, a poriferous that inhabit the Red Sea. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the performance of Latrunculin towards a panel of prevalenter fungi in cell culture labs and, in addition to that, analyze it's effect on different types of animal cells aiming the deposition of innovative product patent to control the microbiological quality of the water used in water baths and in cell culture incubators.
