Relationship among hurricanes from North Tropical Atlantic and the atmospheric circulation over South America

Abstract

Motions in the atmosphere can be associated with many physical phenomena, which have a wide variety of space and time scales. Very large-scale phenomena such as extratropical cyclones, planetary-scale waves, and slow meridional circulations that extend over thousands of kilometers are effective at transporting momentum, heat, and moisture horizontally between the tropics and the polar regions. However, small-scale phenomena such as organized mesoscale phenomena such as thunderstorms and hurricanes are effective primarily at transporting momentum, moisture, and energy vertically, being moving heat sources that can release intense latent heat. Because of these systems are transients, they might affect remote regions during their path. One question one can make is: Is it possible that the Hurricanes developed at the Tropical North Atlantic may affect the South America atmospheric circulation when they pass close to the continent?The main objective of this research is to evaluate through observational data analysis possible inter-hemispheric influences between Hurricanes in the Tropical North Atlantic and atmospheric general circulation patterns on South America, particularly over Brazil.
