Abstract

The concept of ubiquitous computing has for years inspired scientific research and new technological developments. Currently, there are computers of various sizes and formats. However, the predominant interaction model (well defined tasks and goals performed through conventional interfaces) seems to prevent existing computing technologies from becoming "invisible", as proposed in ubiquitous computing. There is a need for a new interaction paradigm that is more "coupled". The objective of this study is to investigate the concept of socioenactive systems as a new interaction paradigm and, based on (1) enactive systems, (2) universal design and (3) interactive art, promote an integration between science and art in order to study and design socioenactive digital artifacts in a socially aware manner. A conceptual model will be proposed and developed to describe interaction in terms of: conscious and unconscious action and multisensory response; still, each person interacting with this socioenactive digital artifact also interacts with perceived experiences and interpretation of art expressed by other people, and may also express their own. Theory and practice will be allied through literature investigations and semioparticipative design workshops. A theoretical and methodological framework will be developed for the design of socioenactive digital artifacts from the perspective of the open and elusive context of art and considering elements of perception and interpretation; for this, prototyping kits will be built for use by people without a technical profile. Digital artifacts that materialize the concept of a socioenactive system will be designed, built and evaluated in the context of an art gallery. (AU)
