The urban planning in Brazil has a strong implementation history of land use and occupation regulation instruments, especially zoning, one of the greatest urban construction process inductors and modelers. However, it is possible to observe the secular use of this instrument in Brazil as a way to protect private property from its pre-eminent rights, as well as to induce the urban activities segregation, often conditioned by fragmented urban space formation. Recently, in spite of the long period in which the land use and occupation rules have been structured in this way, without accompanying cities dynamic transformations, new approaches have been observed, positioned mainly in new conceptual frameworks structured in the discipline of urban design, attracting new conceptions related to urban parameters and updated indexes, focused on urban requalification and collective spaces. Therefore, the research proposes to understand and elucidate the correlation between these new conceptions that have been adopted and the profusion of the conceptual ideals that have spread in Brazil in the last decades related to the qualification and requalification of the urban space in the scope of the disciplinary field of urban design, taking as an empirical case the Parceling, Use and Occupation Law from 2016 (Law 16.402/16). The theoretical-practical knowledge dissemination of this disciplinary field in Brazil may be unfolding in the adoption of design solutions at various scales, including the instruments of regulation of land use and occupation. The research will be carried out through the hypothetical - deductive method, based on one side the set of main concepts and theoretical currents of Urban Design field that arrived in Brazil mainly from translated publications and on the other side the to be interpreted mechanisms established in the aforementioned law founding bases, identifying the traces of penetration of these concepts in this legal instrument.
