The aim of the present research is to evaluate the organic carbon usage in the growth and development rate of the microalgae Ankistrodesmus gracilis. The carbon source will be the molasses from sugarcane. The Algae cultivation will be performed in CHU12 commercial culture media and six alternative culture media. One of them is composed by inorganic fertilizer NPK (20:5:20) and the others are composed by five macrophyte species: Eichhornia crassipes, Eichhornia azurea, Salvinia auriculata, Lemna minor and Azolla filiculoides. Aspects of the biology and the microalgae nutritional quality will be evaluated, along with the ratio cost/benefits of the used medium. The carbon source will be provided in two forms of the molasses: "in natura" and "hydrolyzed". The last form allows the rapid transformation of sucrose into glucose and fructose, which will be readily available to the microalgae. The use of sugarcane molasses in culture medium, which are widely produced in the region of the study, may provide to this product another destination. It may be employed as biological additive for the microalgae, since they may be employed in several sectors of the industry, such as biodiesel production. And the aquatic macrophyte are considered as biological residue from aquaculture. In several cases, when the managements of the productions systems is inadequate, they present high growth rate. Thus, this study may also provide information about a new destination to the aquatic macrophyte. (AU)
