Abstract

The present research project, proposed by the leader of the CNPq group "Contemporary Theories and Technologies applied to design", emerged from the questions raised in the last projects developed by the team. Among them, the main ones were:-Contemporary architecture and automation: practice and reflection (Fapesp, 2012-2015)-Automation in design practice: from Dr. José Nuno Beirão, UTL, Lisbon (Fapesp, 2013)-Complex adaptive systems and rule-based design: applications in architecture and urban design (Fapesp-Melbourne, 2014-2016)The fore-mentioned projects have made us come in contact with several technologies that are becoming more and more common in the practice of architecture and urban design, but which are often applied independently. An example of this is the distance that still exists between parametric and algorithmic modeling used at the beginning of the design process and the use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) systems and building simulation and evaluation systems. For this reason, in 2015, we submitted a project to CNPq in the Productivity in Research category, obtaining a scholarship in level 1D, with the following theme:-In-between - Establishing the bridge between different digital processes in the architecture and urban design project (CNPq Productivity in Research, 2016-2019)Since MIT is one of the main references in the teaching and study of Architecture, being ranked the 1st in the world for three consecutive years, according to the QS Universities, the objective of this project is to investigate how these theories and technologies are gathered in a seamless process in design and research at the School of Architecture and Planning of that University.
