Abstract

Tobacco use affects the overall health of smokers, causing important cardiorespiratory disorders. Thus, to evaluate the influence of immediate smoking and of smoking abstinence in cardiorespiratory performance and recovery of excessive post-exercise oxygen consumption is essential to elucidate these effects on aerobic and recuperative capacities of smokers. Aim: The goal of this application is to improve the quality of which cardiopulmonary testing and analysis are conducted in our laboratory in Presidente Prudente/Brazil. Methods: Cross-over study in which 34 smokers, physically inactive, with normal lung function are evaluate. Patients are submitted to a two cardiopulmonary exercise tests, on two different occasions (after smoking immediately and with 12 hours of abstinence). The allocation of patients to the different moments of the cardiopulmonary test are randomized by the simple randomization mode. Data analysis: The current proposal in Brazil counts on data analysis through the statistical software GraphPad Prism, in which the normality will be evaluated through the Shapiro Wilk test and the intergroup comparison in the different moments of the collection (immediate smoking and smoking abstinence) will be performed by t test (For parametric data) or Mann-Withney test (for non-parametric data), with a significance level of p <0.05. However, this research internship proposal aims to improve the data analysis of this study, so that if the BEPE is granted, the candidate will perform the data analysis with an expert professor in the area, who will guide about the best software’s and the best ways of analyzing the kinetics of ventilatory parameters, in order to improve the results of the present study.
