Currently, the issue of promoting bicycle transport has appeared in several areas of knowledge and is generating various approaches on how interventions in infrastructure can increase the use of bicycles as a mode of transport. In this sense, the central idea of this proposal is that interventions in the "hardware" mobility systems - land use, urban design, physical characteristics of the roads, walking and cycling routes, availability of public bicycles - are important for the growth of bicycle transport use, but not sufficient to cause a change in urban mobility systems. It is also necessary to invest in a "software" side, related to policy implementation and governance, as well as regulation, maintenance practices and information provision. Thus, the following research project aims to determine aspects of the urban environment and planning in the state of São Paulo that influence the use of bicycles as a mode of transport and how these aspects can be optimized to achieve sustainable urban mobility for all. In order to do this, there will be carried out, besides bibliographic research, field research aiming to: a) investigate the role of user perspective in planning strategies adopted in São Carlos e São Paulo (SP, Brazil), Groningen, Amsterdam and Houten (The Netherlands) e London (England), ; b) measuring environmental exposure of cyclists at selected locations in those towns. Field survey results will conduct a joint analysis of planning strategies (a) with the impact on users (b) in order to identify positive and negative practices for encouraging bicycle use. As a result, it is expected to establish a series of policy-related recommendations for the promotion of bicycling transport, which may be used as guidelines for inclusion of this transport mode in Urban, Transport and Mobility Planning.
