Abstract

Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) acrylic resins are the main material used in the manufacture of dental prostheses, in particular denture base. PMMA has many advantages, such as easy processing, simple repairs, low cost and aesthetics. Despite the great progress of research since its introduction in the commercial market, some limitations still persist, such as the adhesion of microorganisms and breakage by impact and fatigue. To make this material even more advantageous, many studies are focused on evaluating how the addition of nanoparticles in the polymer matrix of PMMA influence the mechanical and antimicrobial properties of this resin. To achieve the best performance, it is important to pay attention to the dispersion and interaction of nanoparticles in the polymer matrix. To improve the interaction of the nanoparticles with the resin and to obtain a better distribution, the surface treatment with an organic compound is usually carried out through the procedure called functionalization. The objective of this work is to study the influence of the addition of acrylamide functionalized silver vanadate nanoparticles in PMMA, verifying the improvement in mechanical properties and antimicrobial action.
