Abstract

Pollution of aquatic environments as a result of negative anthropogenic activities remains a major problem, causing disastrous effects on the health of living organisms and becoming the subject of many discussions. To obtain knowledge about the biological levels of pollutants available in the aquatic environment, bioindicators become a very useful tool in aiding the chemical analyzes of water that primarily describe the total concentration of the respective pollutant. Recent studies have shown that, in addition to already established indicators, certain parasites and their hosts can be used as biomonitoring tools, since the pollution also affects their health and, consequently, their occurrence and distribution. Several studies evaluating the role of parasites as accumulators and pollution indicators have been carried out over decades, using a wide parasite-host combination. In addition, the high potential of parasites for metal accumulation and their high effectiveness in the evaluation of aquatic pollution compared to free-living organisms has been clearly demonstrated. Therefore, the objective of this research project is to evaluate the cumulative capacity of heavy metals and the potential bioindicator of fish parasites by comparing the concentrations of the elements with the tissues of their respective hosts in the Jacaré-Pepira and Jacaré- Guaçú River, in the Tietê-Jacaré River basin, State of São Paulo, Brazil. For this, specimens of Hypostomus regani, Hoplias malabaricus and Cichla ocellaris will be collected monthly between March 2017 and March 2019, in both rivers. Samples of parasites (hirudines, nematodes and cestodes), as well as tissues (liver, muscle and intestine), as well as water and sediment from the same collection points will be taken from the fish. The concentration of metals will be determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), and the priority elements will be Magnesium (Mg), Aluminum (Al), Titanium (Ti), Chromium (Cr) (Ni), Copper (Cu), Zinc (Zn), Arsenic (As), Cadmium (Cd), Barium (Ba) and Lead (Pb). After obtaining the concentration data, the Shapiro-Wilk test will be applied to test the normality of the data, then the one-way ANOVA variance test will be applied to test if there are significant differences between the concentrations of the samples (p d 0.01 ). The Spearman correlation test will also be applied to verify if there are possible relationships / interactions between the concentrations of the elements in the tissues, parasites, water and sediment, as well as the sex, size and stage of maturation of the host.
